Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: Mineral resource zones of Monterey County, California
    Abstract:
This map depicts the distribution of Mineral Resource Zones for Monterey County, California. Construction minerals such as sand, gravel, and stone are classified by the State Geologist into four mineral resource zones based on the likelihood of the presence of mineral deposits and their economic value. The areas that contain minerals that can be economically extracted are classified as MRZ 2 and are essential for supplying aggregate used in residential, commercial, and industrial building projects, as well as in public-works projects such as roads, bridges, and pipelines.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1999 (process 1 of 3)
CDGM staff converted the paper maps from SR-146 and OF 99-01 by scanning and manual digitization. The native files were created in MapInfo TAB format. CDMG converted the data into ESRI shapefile format.

    Date: 09-Feb-2001 (process 2 of 3)
The MRZ files (one per quadrangle) were reprojected from UTM Zone 10, 1983, feet to Calif. State Plane Zone 4, 1983, feet. The reprojected data were clipped to the Monterey County boundary. The individual files for each 7.5-minute quadrangle were merged into one shapefile.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

All attributes created during the creation process were verified by displaying the lines in both the database and the spatial coverage, but no formal tests were performed.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

The horizontal positional accuracy is not specified in the metadata file that this database is extracted from.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

This database includes the Mineral Resource Zones as mapped by the California Division of Geology (CDMG) for the central coast area. The area covering Monterey County was extracted from files provided by CDMG. It is a digital version of the paper maps included in CDMG Special Report 146 and Open-File Report 99-01.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

These data are believed to be logically consistent, though no tests were performed.
